The end of the Ronald McDonald mascot

Ronald McDonald was phased out from 2016, after a wave of “scary clown” phenomena. These incidents, in which people dressed as scary clowns appeared on the streets, had made the clown's image less appealing to the public. But that wasn't the only reason. McDonald's was facing increasing criticism for marketing to children, particularly in the context of concerns about childhood obesity. The mascot was seen as a means of attracting young consumers to fast food. Another theory is that the mascot was removed because of the tragic accident in Mexico...

First appearance of Ronald McDonald

Ronald McDonald first appeared
in 1963 in American TV commercials. The mascot took on the appearance of a clown because, on screen, Bozo the clown was immensely popular with children.
What's particularly interesting is that Ronald McDonald became so popular that, according to a 1990s study, he was the second most recognized fictional character by American children, just after Santa Claus.
